Formed by folk singer Mike Scott, the Waterboys have been playing together since 1983. Although the band is often categorized as British folk rock, the Waterboys seem to change musical styles almost as much as they change band members. The band broke up in 1993 and then reformed in 2000, but Scott has gone on record to state that the Waterboys are basically anyone who is accompanying him at the time.
